The Heart of a Library System

San Diego’s central library houses the region’s archives, more than a half-million unique items, the only patent and trademark depository in the region. Here, the most experienced staff helps patrons navigate through overwhelming amounts of printed and digital information.

Yet this facility cannot meet today’s needs, much less tomorrow’s. On a per-capita basis, it has one-fourth the physical capacity and less than half the number of items of comparable libraries. Space for exhibits, events and computer stations is woefully inadequate.

The solution has been envisioned and embraced - a new main library.

San Diego’s bold, new main library, with its adjacent auditorium, will be a vibrant community center. With space to add hundreds of computer stations, this also will be a portal to the future.

This will be the icon anchoring the scenic link connecting Balboa Park with San Diego Bay. The new main will be near the city’s museums, close to its centers of government and commerce, serving a growing downtown residential population.

The form is certain to enhance San Diego’s intellectual, cultural and physical skyline. People outside will see people inside. At night, the dome will glow as a beacon of knowledge.

A new main to serve San Diegans for generations to come is on the horizon.
