The 10-year plan
San Diego’s houses of knowledge are showing their age. They are too
small for our population, too old to accommodate new technology, too
worn to make us proud. That is why the City of San Diego, under the
leadership of Mayor Dick Murphy and Council member Jim Madaffer, in
2002 embarked on the largest capital project for libraries in the
nation.
This ambitious 10-year, $312.3 million project
includes construction of a striking new main library downtown, and
construction or enhancement of 23 branch libraries spanning the city
limits.
On July 30, 2002, the San Diego City Council
unanimously approved the “Library Department Facility Improvement Plan”
and on November 18, 2002 resoundingly approved the detailed finance
plan that includes more than $50 million in non-City funds to be raised
through the Foundation.
